Abstract

Although widely distributed in the Amazon basin and northern South America, Thyroptera lavali is still a poorly known and rarely recorded species, known by few specimens from selected localities in Venezuela, eastern Ecuador, and the Amazon basin of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. In Brazil, the species is known from a single locality in Central Amazon (Rio Tapajós, Alter do Chão) and has not been reported in literature for 21 years. Here we report the second record of T. lavali from Brazil, based on a specimen housed at the Mammal Collection of the CCT-UFMG collected in Mina do Sossego, Canaã dos Carajás, state of Pará in eastern Amazon, expanding its distribution approximately 680 km southeast from the previous known locality of the species. This represents the easternmost record of T. lavali to date. We also present an updated distribution map, morphometrics and illustrate the diagnostic features to identify T. lavali among its congeners.
